@Tweenythepriest Scream bloody gore, leprosy, spiritual healing, human are all perfect examples of what old school death metal sounds like. The same with autopsy, early entombed, atheist, early cannibal corpse, cynic, deicide, obituary. Do all these bands sound the same? No not at all but still they are music from the same genre. I dont care if you like to label atheist as progressive death or entombed "death n roll" etc. Its still old school death metal.
@Tweenythepriest Are you trying to say that hell awaits (the album) is closer to death metal than for example scream bloody gore or leprosy? In that case i salute you for making the dumbest comment of the year. But im sure i just didnt get what you were trying to say. For me and obviously for the people who wrote the pages of music history death metal in its purest form is very very close to both speed and thrash metal. What came after death is just a natural evolution of a genre.
@aurasmash Autopsy always had a more pure death metal approach, no speed/thrash to be found there. And bands like Deeds of Flesh are also pure death metal of the old school. It's a form of composing, not an aesthetic choice.
@aurasmash I'm inclined to agree with 666deathghost, Death was never an absolute definition of death metal, bands like Morbid Angel, Obituary, Autopsy have always been more pure death metal, while Death sometimes was ever less death metal than many bands like Slayer on Hell Awaits. Some fine vocal work is to be heard on Scream Bloody Gore, but the structures are largely similar to a mix between Bonded By Blood and Reign in Blood, both the minimalistic grace of Exodus, and the insanity of Slayer.
