The view from the 4th tallest peak on the Wai'anae Range, Kaua, is probably one of the best views of Ka'ala, Kalena, and Kamaile'unu Ridge on the island. Unfortunately this great trail is officially closed and patrolled by security.
How do we know this? Just before we even pushed off to begin our hike, a white unmarked truck pulls up and a security guard tells us that this is private property, the car would be towed. So once he left, we had an easy solution: park the car somewhere else nearby and walk back here and so we did with no further confrontation for the remainder of the hike!
These remains of what used to be pineapple fields is a maze full of dirt roads, some leading to dead ends, some leading to other places, but only one led to the trailhead and we found it without any problems, thanks to the Hiker's guide, my iPhone GPS/compass, and Kaleo's blog. The only obstacle was that the correct "road", if you want to even call it one, is CHOKED TO DA MAX with California grass. We had to do some serious bushwhacking to get to the trailhead.
Once past the trailhead, the trail is very well defined, for the most part and it isn't at all too difficult to reach the summit. By the time you know it, you're on top and the views are grand!
I will not even bother to tell directions how to get to the trailhead as it is officially closed to the public. Good luck if you decide to hunt this trail down, just make sure not to the park on the side of the main highway.
