I understand where your idea is coming from (you being a new user and all and not knowing the terminal yet ). However all desktop operating systems include a terminal Mac OSX. Windows. Get to know it and you will love the terminal.

@misu3rd You can use the "ctrl-alt-F1", the full terminal to do this. I'm talking about remove the Terminal App, which is in Applications > Acessories > Terminal, you know. Not the whole Terminal System, which Ubuntu depends.
About the installation of "tar.gz", dude... seriously, who in a sane mental state installs "tar.gz" using terminal nowadays? OMG... dude, we are in 2011, not in 2001. Use a .deb, or the Software Center instead, much easier.

@teh5abiking "So leave it out of the default installation, but you MUST keep it in the repositories."
I'm Ok with this. Remove the Terminal App from Ubuntu, but keep the "ctrl-alt-f1" thing, and the repositories for Terminal app. This is good for me, and I think is good for advanced users like you too. Both happy.

Imagine you have an old computer Pentium III 1133 Mhz, 256 ram, video card 64 biti.. Try to install Ubuntu, and after try to use it..try to add software, to remove .. Than you will understand the power of the terminal.. LINUX has always been an OS that uses low resources! Self-Appointed Benevolent Dictator for Life "Herr Führer Mark Shuttleworth" is realy trying to transform Ubuntu in somenthing flashy. What do you do when you have to install a tar.gz?
-
@newuserpointofview I'm not saying that a regular user won't have any need for the Terminal. But it should be included for emergencies and so forth.
I'm telling you, it's IMPOSSIBLE to avoid having to use the terminal at ANY point in time when you have a GNU/Linux system. It might not happen now, but it's inevitable. So leave it out of the default installation, but you MUST keep it in the repositories.

Everyone using Ubuntu has a responsibility to promote and spread its use...Do your part! Burn DVD's for your friends, pass them out at school, join a local team, etc.
Keep up the great work Mark for leading the Linux (Ubuntu) community and making Linux accessible to the average Joe and Jane. I think at the present pace and quality of improvements in the distro, i think maybe ten, twenty years down the road when Linux becomes the norm we will look back and say did we really pay for software back then? Man that was crazy! It's like paying for the software which is included when you buy a car. I think free open software and hardware will be integrated.

@misu3rd Bye bye! lol
The majority people of world will appreciate the "no terminal" thing. Remember: 99% of people are not hackers or advanced users like you, you are the minority. The public that Canonical want to is exactly these 99%.
Tip: More easy and simple = more users, more customers.
