This isn't fake. I've seen this before on some science thing. They were thinking of using this technology on roll up phones but the concept was quickly lost since OLED took over. This technology is called Electronic paper or e-paper which is design to mimic newspaper, but it can't produce color.

I remember seeing these a long time ago, they're trying to make a roll up phone out of this. Good thing we have it in color now.

I think this is the thing called e-paper or you will find it, as e-ink.
It's nothing new. Look at Sony Reader, and you will see what is it exactly.
