In May 2010 some of the THRASS UK team visited Klipspruit Combined School, a farm school in the Kwena Basin, Mpumalanga. The school is one of several local farm schools that have received sponsorship as part of the THRASS Absa TalkTogether Project. We see a lesson with a Grade 3 class (8-10 year olds), in which the children are being taught by a teacher sponsored by Absa. Her lesson begins with the children using the THRASS Magnetic Graphemes (blue and red magnetic tiles) to create the keywords 'net', 'dinner' and 'knee'. The children are then asked to identify other words in which the letter 'n' has the sound (phoneme) (n) and they produce a long list of words, including the word 'phoneme'! The teacher congratulates the children for finding such good words and asks them to read out some of them. When they make a mistake she encourages them to "sound it out" and articulates the separate phonemes contained in the word with them. We see the children completing a worksheet by copying words into columns under the words 'net', 'dinner' or 'knee', according to the key spelling choices found in each word. The teacher has written some sentences on the board and has deliberately spelt some words incorrectly. The children enjoy being given the opportunity to correct her spelling mistakes! The lesson closes with the children singing and dancing to "I'm gonna take my net", the Sing-A-Long Song for Phoneme Number 11, and their enjoyment is clear for all to see.
