"About the film
The plot:
The film tells the story of a great love of Mania, a cigarette factory worker, to a talented composer Hans -- a love originating from the girl's fascination with music, love strong enough to make her capable of the greatest of sacrifices. Mania's beauty and enthralling dance incite passion in an art patron Morelli, who wants to make her his mistress. In return he promises to put Hans' new opera on stage. Faced with a difficult choice, Mania decides to help her love make his dream come true, a choice that leads to a tragic finale.
About the movie:
"Mania. The history of a cigarette factory worker" is one of the first movies in the rich portfolio of the Polish actress Pola Negri. The superstar-to-be stared in it as a twenty year old, barely at the start of her great career. Already she charmed the audience with her exotic beauty, pretty eyes, supple body, expressiveness and unique personality. All those qualities of the rising star were put to good use by the Hungarian director Eugen Illés in a moving story of a young worker capable of sacrificing herself for the sake of art, to let the opera composed by her love be seen by the public. The actress met the director again in 1918 on the set of the German movie "The Yellow Ticket".
"Mania" is the result of an international cooperation between artists, from the time when silent movies crossed the national and linguistic borders. The Movie was shot in Berlin in politically turbulent times however its contents pertain to universal truths. The great artistic value of "Mania" comes from the lively narration, interesting acting and characters, as well as innovative operator's tricks, which make it a valuable relic of cinematography, among the most important silent movies. The elaborate scenery was designed by Paul Leni, later known for his direction of expressionist movies
The movie was long thought irrevocably lost. In 2006 Filmoteka Narodowa (National Film Archive) bought the copy from a Czech collector and subjected it to painstaking reconstruction process. Thanks to those efforts "Mania" was in a sense brought back to life." http://www.maniafilm.pl/?page_id=21
