@winrx some people call it expressive intonation

Seriously, is it me or does he always seem to be playing slightly out of tune - usually on the sharp side? That might explain the headaches I usually get after listening to him for extended periods...

He's one of my favorites. I love his passion just like I love Heifetz's talent.

People base their opinion on performances he gave in the 80ies when he travelled, gave speeches and gala concerts, etc. more than he practiced - and he wasn't young anymore at that time. But no one could play better than Stern in his prime. Between his 20ies and 40ies he mastered the fiddle far better than what you can see in today's violinists though everybody says today's level is higher. In my opinion he was more technically perfect than either Heifetz or Oistrakh.

clean---CLEAN.-- why do you hang up on such nonsense???
thats not everything in music!! this great master has everything a
genius on violin has to have- beside him 10000violinists maybe
have eben better technique - but he is special!!

No other violinist's sound comes as close to the human voice as Isaac Stern. In the second half of his career I suspect he didn't practice much, but he always communicated so sincerely and simply through every note. I love his playing.
