This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the various consoles I own.

Thief: Deadly Shadows is the third installment of the cult classic Thief series.

I know that many uninformed people will look at this vid and say "What a Splinter Cell rip off." The original Thief hit in 1998, and Splinter Cell actually took elements from the Thief series first. It's not a big deal, because game developers take good ideas all the time. I will say that this version of Thief has since taken elements from Splinter Cell.

Thief already had the light meter, and even the ability to pick locks. However, the first two Thief Games were in the first person view. This Thief takes the style of lock picking from Splinter Cell, and the third person perspective. It even controls very similar too.

So there you have it, SC took from Thief, and Thief then took from SC, so neither is a complete rip off of the other, but I'm writing this for the Halo generation who don't remember anything pre-last gen.

Thief III plays like a medieval version of Splinter Cell (I'm using SC, because that's the game the most people will know even though I just explained that it took elements from SC, but SC took from Thief first) where instead of using your stealth in a covert mission (though the game does have a story that unravels in missions of sorts), you use it to rob people blindly. It's got more of an open world feel to it. This vid doesn't really show the world off, because I'm doing a mission so to speak.

Think of it as something akin to Deus Ex (To the Halo generation, look it up) where you're free to explore the world (and rob people in it) openly, you have the choice of whether or not to go for the kill or the knockout on the NPCs, and there are even multiple paths to choose from in each level.

The story unravels via mission goals. You'll have to steal certain items to progress the story which means going to, for lack of a better word, various levels, and robbing the people there as stealthily as possible.

The graphics (for those who care) are top tier original Xbox. This game runs on the Deus Ex Invisible War game engine, and looks very sharp.

Now, you may notice more than a few similarities between main character Garrett the thief, and Altair the assassin from Assassin's Creed. The difference between them, however, is that Garret is a pansy of sorts. He's really not equipped for combat, so it's important to stay stealthy whereas Altair can handle a sword when needed. However, this Thief makes combat a lot easier than the previous versions, because in Thief 1 and 2, you didn't have a prayer of taking on a guard head on. In Deadly Shadows, the guards still take off a lot, but they're a lot easier to kill.

Thief: Deadly Shadows is also available on the PC. It's also Xbox 360 compatible, but it runs glitchy, so it's best to play on an original Xbox, but the 360 is an option for those who got rid of their original Xbox.

  • Is this compatiable for the 360?

  • @Tjorvz1 Yes.

  • In the description you mentioned two thieves, Jared and Garrett. Is it a mistake or am I just missing some information?

  • @HabboBabiesRule It was a mistake. For some reason I was thinking Jared when I wrote the description.

  • Ok this game loos cool. I love stealth games and elder scrolls. I always play stelth in elder scrolls, This game looks bad ass but I read somewhere it doesnt run good on the xbox 360. Is this true. I heard the torches go through walls and stuff. Please someone confirm for me. Thanks

  • Such fond memories of playing the demo of this game. It is one of the most memorable games. I am thinking of picking it up on Amazon.com or something since the demo runs PERFECTLY for me (even on Windows 7 64x). I think that, imo, it would've have been nice to see Assassin's Creed use many of these mechanics, and such simple things as crouching (especially when on rooftops-I mean come on!). Thief 4 is coming soon let's hope 2012! Dishonored is made by one of the Thief creators btw! Google it!

  • still have this game might give it a go again

  • It seems a assassins creed ...

Does the assassin creed was based on some features of this game?

  • @lumpy1011 To a certain extent, you can travel around the city but it has a loading screen in every district during traveling. You can help factions like the hammerites and the pagans so they can help you, or you can be at war with them but will make the game harder. You can also help your ally faction in battles on the street. You can also get arrested and put in prison if the guard catches you and you need to escape. But the main focus of the game is to follow the main plot.

  • I love this game.. im playing it now because my beloved 360 is being repaired at the moment..

  • I liked this game way less than Thief 2 because this is more linear and it is less of a challenge to stealth, you can just kill guards, whereas in thief 2 the point of combat was LAST resort, most missions said you couldn't kill anyone and that made it a fun challenge.

  • is this a free roamer

  • @Tamrowan

    look up on snesorama

  • He, just started this game again and it is awesome!

When will we see another one on the nextgens?
