Jungle survival food, the heart of palm or 'Umbut' as the locals call it. This is done by a Penan in the remote jungle of Sarawak, purely for eating. Rainforest bushcraft!

  • When you do it this way, does it kill the tree?

It would seem easier to just take the tree down and lay it down on the ground while working away the outer layers. I remember seeing that method employed by Amazon tribesmen in one of Ron Hood's Woodsmaster videos.

  • @docnightfall Hi there! Thank you for your comment. If I remember correctly, there are two reasons why this was done this way in this particular video. First, I was told that when they harvest only the top part, chances are the tree will grow back. The other reason is that the tree was at quite a high ledge. I think he did not want to risk the umbut falling into the river (which leads to a HUGE waterfall).

    Thanks

  • how long did it take?

  • @lime7077 Less than 30 minutes if I remember correctly.

  • kalau dah amik umbut tu, pokok tu mati ke?

  • @kamarulx unfortunately yes. Actually inilah yang jadi satu hal sebab kat semenanjung pun, banyak group yang ajar 'jungle survival' pun buat benda yang sama. Pokok habis lama-lama.
