Well, in this video he didn't blow the whistle at all while he was near you. If he whistled for the crossing that you were near, it would've been loud. On this railroad, they sometimes do short whistle signatures but still at full blast. When I do crossing runbys, I'm usually right next to the tracks, close enough to feel the heat of the steam engine and feel the wind from the running gear. Imagine railfanning the way I do... The whistle's so loud!

yeah its weird, this train was also my first standard gauge steam runby, and i always thought steam engines were LOUD

Do steam runbys by a CROSSING and then you'll think VERY otherwise.

This one WAS at a crossing! Something tells me locals don't want them to blow the whistle too much... people move next to a rail line then complain about noise...
