Obama: "Any Nation--Including Iran," Right to Peaceful Nuclear Power Under NPT Treaty

(6/04/09) President Barack Obama proposes in his Cairo speech to allow peaceful nuclear energy development in any nation, including Iran, if the "responsibilities" of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) are complied with.

This is a highly naive, potentially dangerous and unrealistic proposal considering the experience with countries like Iran and North Korea, which have a long and checkered history when it comes to inspection of their "peaceful" nuclear related facilities:

(Side Note): Does "any nation" include the USA? Can the number of nuclear power plants in the U.S. finally be expanded to meet its own energy needs?)

Obama: "No single nation should pick and choose which nations hold nuclear weapons. That is why I strongly reaffirmed America's commitment to seek a world in which no nations hold nuclear weapons. And any nation - including Iran - should have the right to access peaceful nuclear power if it complies with its responsibilities under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. That commitment is at the core of the Treaty, and it must be kept for all who fully abide by it." (1:28)
