Other creeps who would have it in them to be as despicable as Irv Hartwig are Horace Beckwith from "A Faraway Cry" Coy from "He Was Only 12" Hugh McGregor from "Freedom Flight" and those two disgusting mooks from a season 3 ep involving another Elmer who was a little simple. Joel and Kent were heartless boys who entertained themselves at Elmer's expense. Needless to say, I think those creeps were all at the bottom of the scum heap.

When Mary was going to get married (and didn't until she went blind and shacked up with her teacher) Charles was acting like anybody in the era would have. They would have let her get married at 13 because people didn't live as long as they do today. In Laura and Albert's cases he was acting like anybody would have in the 1970s and 1980s when the show was filmed. I guess its just an inconsistency on the part of the writers.
