Analysis: Somalia Piracy Began in Response to Illegal Fishing and Toxic Dumping by Western Ships off Somali Coast

President Obama vowed an international crackdown to halt piracy off the coast of Somalia Monday soon after the freeing of US cargo ship captain Richard Phillips, who had been held hostage by Somali pirates since last Wednesday. While the pirates story has dominated the corporate media, there has been little to no discussion of the root causes driving piracy. We speak with consultant and analyst Mohamed Abshir Waldo. In January, he wrote a paper titled The Two Piracies in Somalia: Why the World Ignores the Other? [includes rush transcript]

  • the rich are strangling the poor :(

  • My question is this, why are these ships in Somalian waters?

Wouldn't it be easier to hug the coast of Arabia?

    There would be less confrontation.

How come people love pirates on T.V. and movies(Pirates of the Caribbean), and of the past, but despise these ones?

Who are basically saying, "STAY OUT OF OUR WATERS"

  • Foreign countries dumping toxic, industrial and even nuclear waste off the east African shores, while the same foreign nations that's not a part of the African continent are extracting all the fish and other seafood that would belong to Kenya, Somalia and other African nations? This is unacceptable! What's even worse is that mainstream media in many non-African nations never mentioned these incidents to their general public. This video woke me up to what's really going on in Africa!

  • what do you see that is lazy. this is htere home wht the hell are we doing over there in there waters and their land with our military that shit is crazy. we are in their land. calling them names and arresting and killing them.

if we dont like them stay home are go somewhere else it si simple

  • you people are somethng else how can this country always go and commit its criminal activities and criminalize the people where they commit their atrocities. everywhere they go. everywhere.

  • I agree.

  • i just don't understand one thing - why the ransom why not use the captive audience to tell the world about these injustices - people in u.s. are out protesting issues in tibet and darfur. i'm sure there would be many a sympathetic ear if they had not asked for ransom and explained these issues. holding people bringing food aid to people in need for ransom doesn't earn anyone sympathy and doesn't make sense.
