You can hear the ghost of Sidney Bechet to this very day in the streets of New Orleans. The echoes of his soaring lines on the clarinet and soprano saxophone still leap to life in the collective improvisations of brass bands. Two tracks are included in this video. "Summertime" is from 1939, and features Bechet on soprano with Meade Lux Lewis on piano, Teddy Bunn on guitar, John Williams on bass and Sid Catlett on drums. "Egyptian Fantasy" is from 1941 and features Bechet on clarinet and soprano sax with Henry 'Red' Allen on trumpet, J.C. Higginbotham on trombone, James Tolliver on piano, Wellman Braud on bass and J.C. Heard on drums.

In making the video I have borrowed photographs from the internet, photos of Sidney Bechet and a variety of shots pertaining to New Orleans, some dating back to the time of the recordings, some more recent. I have included a few photographs from John Ernest Joseph Bellocq (1873 -- 1949). Bellocq was a professional photographer who worked in New Orleans during the early 20th century. He is remembered for his haunting photographs of the prostitutes of Storyville, New Orleans' legalized red light district. DL

Note: This video is made for educational purposes and to honor the work of Sidney Bechet. If anyone objects to this not-for-profit video due to copyright issues, please make contact and it will be removed.

  • Well done, very nice pictures! It is a pity Bechet is so little known compared to Louis due to his absence from the "scene" between 1925 and 1931 (by the way, there is no soprano on Egyptian Fantasy).

  • @oldtimejazzfan ... re: "no soprano", I didn't hear one either, though the track lists Bechet on both clarinet and soprano.
