Drawing and Coloring My Kingdom Hearts OC Styx

So this is why I haven't uploaded anything resently.
I was teaching myself to do this!

Steps:

1) Using the paint brush tool (NOT THE PENCIL!), I traced over the lines in a darker color of what I intended to use, whichever color was layered on top being the one I used.

2) I made a new layer, to color what came over the top, namely her necklace and earings.

3) The hair went on another layer, and drove me crazy with as many colors as I needed. @_@

4) I mergered the layers, and drew the outline for her eye.

5) On the new layer, I colored the eye, each individual color in it's own layer, which I merged together, excluding the pupil and outline. Then I used the Gaussian Blur with the little button that looks like a checker board in the layer box (Lock transparent pixals) selected, and adjusted it until I was satisfied with the result. I had to add brighter colors to make it look good, and the shine awas just a new layer with a very light green and white blurred over the rest.

6) I merged all these layers together, and on a new layer, called "Skin", I scribbled the base skin color.

7) I used the basics for the next two layers, and then erased all the color outside the lines.

8) Using three shades, two shadows and one highlight (Two highlights for the coat), I shaded all three layers, keeping the Lock transparent pixals selected for each, and blurred again.

9) I merged all layers (Except the outline layer), and repeated the steps for the hair, though this time I used the burn and dodge tools to shade. I used the smudge tool on the highlights to make them look more like actual strands of hair.

10) I made a background, which I'm sure you can watch to figure out what I did XP

what program do you use to do this? is it free? right now im stuck using paint and it doesn't have any cool featurwes like this does... oh and i love ur character :)
