Director Mario Bava used the mirror-based Schufftan Process to combine live action with miniatures and thereby avoiding the costly matte/optical printing techniques.
Honestly I thought the sets and backgrounds were astonshingly good for the time epriod in which it was made and I love the costumes also,The space suits were particularly original and very nicely done and I want one damnit lol.

  • Googled mirror-based Schufftan Process. Trivia : The technique was used in metropolis (1927) and Lord of the Rings trilogy. Even in the 21st century with all the advaced computer technology we have they are using a FX technique that was developed in the silent film era. I think the magma field set would have looked better if they had slo-moed the steam though. It was moving way to fast for that scale.

  • If someone left me on guard duty like they did Eldon at 09:10, I would get inside the airlock! I'd do all of my patrolling by peeping out the window.

  • They look like the x-men costumes

  • 4:24 on: it's the conga line of DEATH! :D

  • Their suits reminds me of x-men!

  • 5 minutes and 40 seconds into this clip they use the inside of a telescope observatory for the inside of a spacecraft

  • the ideas and cinematography from this movie were used for the american movie ALIEN

  • never thought i would see magneto as a space capitan

  • Nice style of colouration. Gives the place a creepy, infernal appearance!

3:28 ~ How sweet. They died in each other's arms.

5:41 ~ So they disappeared into fat air, then.

Seriously, though, great mixing of colour, creeping mists and weird howling noises! It's like a whole frikkin' haunted planet!
