My first year in middle school was simply survival. Once I figured out the rules I could make choices as to how I wished to survive. The more I acted on my choices, the more I talked to my peers, the more truth I saw in me. Black life was becoming clearer still. My life was becoming clearer still.

you're on to something there. the world is too big, problems too interconnected to find out where they began. easier to give up and play video games.

too much outside - why bother + concentrate on the inside + improve the self (that's all i really know these days) - the rest of the world is too big - too impossible - too much time i don't have just to start to know their issues (i.e israel/palestine) = AN AMERICAN LIFE... that's the equation.

folks are made to think their lives involved enough... too much really. how many passwords do you have to use today? atm? computer programs at work? just to get in touch with family and friends? our lives are involved. very involved. self involved... take a look at my OIL playlist if you haven't already. i go into the modern reality you hint at in those vids.

easy to publicize suffering when there are only 4 channels on tv and a few media outlets, newspapers, magazines of influence. when i first came to america in 1985, getting your name in TIME magazine or NEWSWEEK actually meant something. now they are drowned out by US WEEKLY and STAR. news is NOT news, get me? i don't think there's a cabal of unscrupulous men keeping REAL news from us. news is there. haiti ain't going nowhere. we just gotta choose to look and the DO SOMETHING.

i never felt i lived thru anything historic until i went to barrack's inauguration last month. there's not that impetus b/c looks like we're okay. no one sicking dogs on us. no guns, no assassinating the rebel leaders --biko, lumumba, che. all looks much better... and really, it is... and it ain't. hard to explain to the young who can make better sense of black and white, not the shiny gray we are in.

agree. but it's all a process the committed must shepherd thru. imagine a young mind with any of this stuff in it on top of 800 channels of cable and instant gratification online. very easy to turn one's head or cacoon oneself.

you must also find the courage to act on whatever wisdom you are gaining through that search. i read, i thought, i wrote, i rewrote, i mulled over information. i was too shy in junior and high school to act... but no more. i must act NOW! you will get there if you want it bad enough. go through the process. start today. read. read. read. gain knowledge.
