thats not true at all. the higher you go the less dense the atmosphere is. and he hasnt actually left the atmosphere hes just in the outer layers of it about where our weather balloons are.

I just watched a document about Kittinger & co. These were US Air Force experiments in the 50s&60s. The surfing part is something else but absolutely fitting ;)

Project Excelsior - It was a series of high altitude skydives designed to simulate aircraft bailouts at high altitude. Check it on wikipedia.
