A strong earthquake of magnitude 8.9 struck on Friday (11) to the northeast coast of Japan, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), killing at least 300 people inthe country and generating a tsunami (tidal wave with destructive potential) threateningcoastal countries of the Pacific Ocean.
The quake was the 7th worst in history, according to American agency, and also theworst on record in Japan


Local TV pictures show that the quake caused a tsunami, which hit areas of theJapanese city of Sendai. Cars and boats were swept in stunning images.
Soon after the quake, a warning for waves up to six meters high, was issued in thecountry. The Tsunami Warning Center Pacific, U.S. agency also issued a warning to many countries, the surge of up to ten meters. Several governments have issuedwarnings and ordered the evacuation of some residents of coastal areas.
Waves "small" hit the Philippines hours after the quake, said the country's chiefseismologist.
Indonesia also reported that there was no damage to the incoming waves, and the government raised the alert. The island of Guam, U.S. territory in the Pacific, has raisedthe alert.
Um forte terremoto de magnitude 8,9 atingiu nesta sexta-feira (11) a costa nordeste do Japão, segundo o Serviço Geológico dos EUA (USGS), matando ao menos 300 pessoas no país e gerando um tsunami (onda gigante com potencial destrutivo) que ameaça países da costa do Oceano Pacífico.
O tremor foi o 7º pior da história, segundo a agência americana, e também o pior já registrado na história do Japão.

Imagens de TVs locais mostram que o abalo provocou um tsunami, que alcançou áreas da cidade japonesa de Sendai. Carros e barcos foram arrastados, em imagens impressionantes.
Logo após o tremor, um alerta para ondas de até seis metros de altura foi emitido no país. O Centro de Alerta de Tsunamis do Pacífico, agência americana, também emitiu um alerta para vários países, de onda de até dez metros. Vários governos emitiram alertas e alguns ordenaram a retirada de moradores de áreas costeiras.
Ondas "pequenas" atingiram as Filipinas horas depois do terremoto, informou o sismólogo chefe do país.
A Indonésia também informou que não houve danos na chegada das ondas, e o governo levantou o alerta. A ilha de Guam, território americano do Pacífico, já levantou o alerta.
