Musical creations served by special voices and of powerful rhythms constitute soul and mind of UMOJA. « Our music helps us to remain human because in Africa, rhythm is the life itself », declares Hope, the narrator of the show.

It's interesting that this South African musical uses a Swahili word as its title instead of a word from a South African language. The word "umoja" ("unity") may have been chosen as the title because of its meaning AND because (thanks to the African .American holiday Kwanzaa) umoja is more familiar to the show's targeted Western audiences than the Zulu word ubuntu. Besides, I think words that start & end with "u"s aren't aesthetically pleasing in the USA,so "ubuntu" probably wouldn't work.

This is great!! Those brothers exude so much energy & creativity. I love it!
There's clearly a strong connection between South African gumboot dancing and steppin' routines. Steppin' iis most closely associated with African American university based (Greek letterd) fraternity and sororities. Check out cocojams page of step, stroll, & gum boot dances for some representative examples of these movement arts performed by teans from fraternal orgs, school students, churches, and even the US army!
