This video production is dedicated In Memory of my friend Robert T. H. Thayer Jr. Lost at Sea on Georges Banks, 180 miles SE of Nantucket, MA, on November 22, 1980. Robbie was taking a year off from college and had a site on the 72 ft offshore Lobster Boat "Fair Wind". The forecast was decent, nothing out of the ordinary, and while they steamed for the banks a violent coastal storm was brewing off the Carolina's. Newly built, they were on their last trip of the season having left Hyannis, MA on November 20, 1980. By the morning of the 22nd of November Fair Wind and her crew were in the fight of their lives in 60 to 80 foot seas and 125 MPH winds, while the Weather Radio continued to belch a forecast of 25 mph winds for Georges Banks. A report of Hurricane force Winds and storm warnings all the while sat on the desk in Washington DC in the office of the NWS for a full nine hours before it was forwarded on to Boston. By mid day, November 22, 1980, Al Eagles' " Reliance", who had been with in a mile and a half of "Fair Wind" suddenly lost radio and radar contact with her. A lone survivor Ernie Hazard was picked up 72 hours later by the USCG, plucked from a Givens Life Bouy, from which he said he had been thrown several times in that period.By Presidential Order the search was extended and extra week. No other debris or persons were ever found. Video production and all photography by Peter Warburton. Produced at Foggy Breeze Recording Studio, Newport, RI. Soundtrack "The Zubenelganubi" written and performed by my friiend and shipmate Jim McGrath. The Zubenelganubi as I recall went down in 1975 or 6. I was in high school that much i do remember. Steve Kelly tended bar in our familie's father's tavern at the time, when he wasn't fishing. Press pause to read the blurbs, as they move kind of quickly up the screen at the end. I used the song because is quite fitting and was performed by Jim on this sound track. It's specific to an incident, and yet generic enough to be applied to too many incidents, year in and year out. My special thanks to Jim. The names may be different, the stories are usually quite similar. " A vessel was lost today"., or, "A crew of 4 and their vessel is reported missing today on Georges Banks". " A vessel and her crew is reported overdue today from....". . These stories are all too familiar where we live in New England. I dedicate this video production In Memory of my best friend Robert T.H. Thayer Jr., Born Oct. 11, 1958, Lost at Sea on Nov. 22, 1980 at 22 years of age. To those aboard Fair Wind, Zubenelganubi and to all those who risk their lives at sea, Godspeed. Peter Warburton
