At 11:00am on Friday, September 7th, the CUPE Local 410 workers of the Greater Victoria Public Library (Victoria, BC, Canada) made their first action to strike.
They had been in an official and legal
position to strike since 8:00am that morning, but chose to only close their doors for a three hour period during the middle of the day.
In this video, Ed Seedhouse, CUPE Local 410 President, explains why the action was taken, and what obstacles lie ahead for the library.

While I fully support the rights of workers to peacefully negotiate with their employers, I believe that this job action has taken on an ugly, spiteful element.
Your actions of shutting down public computers and Wi-Fi networks, and fencing off sections of the libraries are not within your rights as a union. You have no right to hold the property of taxpayers hostage and use the public as bargaining chips in your silly game.
You have lost my support and respect.
