On July 16th, for over one hour the horses were forced to illegally work in this heat wave. The temperature was above 90°F and the horses are not permitted to work in above 89°F. The ASPCA had earlier removed them off the street but they returned against the law. It took over one hour for the ASPCA to respond since their officers were in another borough responding to another cruelty case.. The carriage drivers made different excuses but the fact remained that it was above 90°F and the ASPCA did not sanctioned them to work against the law. There is very little regulation protecting the horses and one of them is that horses can not work when it is above 89°F. The ASPCA responded after receiving numerous complaints that the horses were pulling passengers in such horrid conditions. Please bear in mind that temperature per law does not take into affect the humidity factor. That day, there was a heat advisory issued and yet the horses were forced illegally to work on the streets.

This is why this industry must end. it is not about the horses but about money. There is very little regulation for the welfare of the horses and these regulation aren't even followed by the industry nor hardly enforced.

Note at the end, the carriage driver, from Guiseppe & Lorenzo Riccobono, refused to leave even after the ASPCA told him and the other drivers also informed him. In fact he was about to take passenger until I called him out. what a shame.

  • cont .......... one only needs to observe your health care system to see the writing on the wall ......... and to look at how those that risked their lives at ground zero following 9/11 to see the epitome of this concept on a grand scale .... how many have been sick or died since then only to have what they sought to preserve and the thanks they got ... shame on the lot of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lest we forget ...karma is a bitch

  • Lest we forget ..... used to be a man would be hung for stealing a man's horse ... Gandhi once said that you can gauge the moral progress of a nation on how it treats its non-human kin ... guess where your going horse buggy masters .... what will become of you when it is no longer economically sound to preserve the lower middle class ... goodbye cruel world for you ... that is what shall be inevitable unless we begin to value life over material gain - you put the nail in your own coffin ....

  • Shame on them. And I yell it out of my Lincoln everytime I pass one.

  • These people don't give a big fat darn. They care nothing for the suffering of others as long as their pockets are filled. All I can say is, I hope that each driver that makes these horses work in this heat will not get one passenger! It would serve them right!

  • It is always a problem when people use horses to make money. They cannot help themselves, exploiting the horse to work harder, longer, when they are not supposed to. They cut back on good quality food, farrier and dental care because they want more money in their pocket. Commercial carriage driving is not a noble profession. Per Buddha's teachings, the Right Vocation does not cause suffering in others. These horses suffer. Listening to the drivers in this video embarrasses the city of NY.
