I built this genset using a 10KW Generator head. The tractor is 14hp at the PTO. 825 PTO speed. Used a double V-belt system to get the 3600 RPM needed for 240V. I can get about 7-7500 KW of power. I took the protection cover off so you can see how I have it put together. Thanks to all of my friends who helped out with the project.

  • @danielthechskid- Thanks and good observation, yes the genset needs to be installed on the correct side of trailer to keep from lifting during load. Good idea with the disk mower pto/pulley. Let me know how you make out.

  • @AlternativePowerMan- I ended up buying a digital hz/Volt meter and plugged it in to the genset. This helps me obtain correct V/hz. On this setup, I get 3600 required rpm at the generator shaft. At 3600, my tractor runs 2500 rpms. The governor on the tractor keeps me at 2500 rpm and generator speed needed to get 120/60hz. One thing I did not do and have since corrected, is that I bought a matched pair of V- belts. Unmatched belts cause belt slippage on double groove pulleys..

  • Never got to try it out for a long period of time yet. Did lose power few weeks ago for about five hours, didn't use hardly any fuel. Tractor engine was running at 2500 rpms. I bought a digital meter and it was staying at 120V 60 hz. give or take. Got good response when the pumps in the house kicked on. Just a slight draw then a quick power up. Thanks for asking.

  • Excellent Job!!!! Oh Man.....this is so cool.....it's just what i'm trying to do. i have the generator but where do i get the belts and pulleys? The generator has a 1inch shaft

  • built a similar set up. We built a frame that the 3 point hooks to and put casters on the bottom for easier install at 3 am. Also, we spent a great deal of time playing with gear ratios and wound up mounting some combine pulleys then doubled up on them to eliminate slip and distortion. As a result the tractor generates 6kw at around 850 rpm, so one tank of diesel runs about 8 hours. good to see we arent the only ones who do this kinda thing.

  • nice set up ,thinkin about doin same with a 2.3 kw genny but will probably put genny over the pto shaft and set it up on 3 pt linkage have 19 hp at the tractor shaft and 3 speed pto so trying to figuer out the different pto speeds as 2.3 kw will not require much power to run it , so low engine speed in the high pto gear and then adjust with the pullys to get correct genny speed ,made some enquiries and was told about 2 hp per kw for pto driven gennys so should have lots of power at pto .:)

  • better to operate the alternator at 3600rpm, stopped and nothing else. Saves having to replace voltage regulators with some excitation systems.

  • Excellent job. I want to build a similar unit possibly using the pulley and PTO shaft from a disk mower.

    You even mounted the head on the correct side. Since the PTO turns clockwise as viewed from behind the torque would have to lift the head up to try to flip the trailer. If the head were on the other side it could more easily flip over when a load is appllied.
