Hello Paul,
I am an artist and tutor in New Zealand and although I have many years experience in pen and wash, pastels and acrylics......I have one problem that keeps coming up again and again...
My lightest lights never look light enough.
I read in your book from our library "Pastels From Scratch" about the tones and values and I think the problem is not enough graduation of the tones, would I be right......I paint yellow next to purple, add more white, add more yellow, still does not seems light enough.... help?
I am so impressed with your books and will become a very interested reader of your website.

Hi Paul,
I have just starting drawing in Pastels. I have already purchased several books of yours that pertained to pastel drawing.

What type of paper would you recommend for just practice in gaining control of the pastel medium. I find myself partial to the pastel pencils but also want to use the softer pastels in combination with them.

I am somewhat limited at the moment on what I can spend for more supplies so find myself afraid to loosen up in practice sessions on the more expensive papers for fear of wasting them.

Is Rice paper a good alternative for practice? Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

In this 2-Part Paul Taggart Painting Snippet, he demonstrates how to prepare an exciting surface using some discarded mounting card and acrylic paints; then takes you step-by-step through the process of working dark to light with a range of tints of one single colour to achieve contrast of darks against lights, to arrive at the final finishing highlights. By using one single colour in this way Paul demonstrates that it is not the use of various colours that matter, it is the layering of tints of a single colour that build up a tonal range.
