good gravy. in the demo video i was like, "Yeah right, that thing will never move like that!" Well, i ate my words...it tasted like...strider.
It moves by initiating a fall forward, and recovers by dropping a foot in front. That suggests dynamics that would be upset by (need recalculating for) an environment with wind and/or viscosity like under water. Also what does it do if it falls and lands with one or more legs in the air?

The motion of the knee joint is dictaed by the tilt angle of the body by active control - only when needed. One student is working on standing up strategies - we have 4 ways of making it stand up, including one utilizing a dynamic whipping motion of one of it's legs.

It seems a flawed but promising design. In the video it show it (simulated) walking over rocks. Since the robot depends on falling forward to walk, what happens if the knee joint of the leg swinging forward hits something like a large rock or fallen tree? Would it trip over? Is it smart enough to cause itself to fall backward quickly to counter this stumble? Many questions unanswered indeed. Still, very cool.

Unlike STriDER 1.0, all joints of STriDER 2.0 are actuated to handle such cases using dynamic path planning of the swing leg foot. It still utilizes the concept of passive dynamic locomotion since the joint trajectories follow the path as if they were not actuated, thus still energy efficient.
