Not only is it a good heat source (better than fossil gases) but it has no carbon monoxide...

@rewindyourpants I think its ammonium sulfate in cold quick packs. ammonium nitrate would be too dangerous to use since it is very volitile when mixed with an oxidizer, air, and fuel source, carbon, oil, etc.

Does the water become saturated with lye ? I guess I mean if you reapply 4 more teaspoons of lye to the previously mixed water will the same heating occur ?

John, sorry if you thought I was making a joke. I just ment that the lye can be used as a catalast in hydrogen production. With it also being able to produce some heat it would allow us in the northern climates to keep our hydrogen units in our cars from freezing just by adding a little lye and making sure the unit is well insulated.

its just an exothermic reaction of the NaCl mixed with water. i think you can do just the opposite with ammonium nitrate which is what they use in quick cold packs.
