@49jubilee, Bi racials were known as "high yellow",not so many years ago. I don't know why unless it was because their skin was lighter than the full blooded African slaves. There was a rumor this song was written in honor of a biracial free woman,(Emily Stewart)who kept the Mexican General occupied,while the Americans led a sneak attack and defeated the Mexican army.
I've heard ROSES were black women (rose of color) and many blacks don't know this--they even played the banjo together (in another version) ---oh the IRONY
