Composed by Nan Bostick, 2003. I first heard this soulful piece when the composer played it at the West Coast Ragtime Festival last month in Sacramento, CA. Fortunately, Nan published the sheet music and recorded it on CD, from which I learned it. http://cdbaby.com/cd/bostickbrier2

  • Nice job. Don't think I've heard anyone other than Nan play this -- maybe Tom Brier or Stevens Price. Nice perhaps accidental touch to have the cover of the music visible on the piano there. Heheh. As for Karen's question, it's definitely a rag, though certainly modern in style. Let's not forget that Terre Verde was once called ragtime too -- same as jazz was.

  • Well, the cover of the sheet music happened to be there, but I did notice it and intentionally left it there - thanks for noticing!

  • Hi Paul,

This has a very warm folksy feel to it, and your melody really sings out. It certainly is a change up from the Joplin rags. I like it, but is it really a rag? You have wonderful accents and articulation in your performance that adds so much to the character of the piece... 5 star's for sure! More please!

  • "Ragtime piano...is syncopated music...that usually consists of three or four repeated distinct sixteen measure sections in a tonic and subdominant keys in the sectional form of A A B B A C C D D or a variation thereof." --- 'Perfessor' Bill Edwards

"The defining characteristic is...syncopation in which melodic accents occur between metrical beats." -- Wikipedia Since this piece has a steady bass line with duple rhythm, syncopation and repeated 16-measure sections, I'd say it's a rag

  • This is one of my favorite rags, and it has some beautiful melodies, as well as lilting rhythms. It is definitely a rag, and a good job on the performance.

  • It is syncopated, and has a variety of styles within it. It seems to have some latin rhythyms in the bass, in the trio I believe...like solace, which is more of a serenade. It is terre verde style, isn't it?
