Brainerd Minn. power substation switch explodes on a quiet Sunday (Oct. 7, 2012) afternoon causing power outages in the city, including to the Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center, which used backup generators in the interim. The massive boom with the blast shook houses and brought residents out of their homes as a flash of flame and plume of black smoke shot into the air. It's unclear what caused the explosion. Brainerd Public Utility Crews worked to restore power around the damaged switch and subsequent problems in the transformer with expectations to have the grid back up before the end of the day.
