Country of Origin Labeling is a labeling law that requires retailers, such as full-line grocery stores, supermarkets, and club warehouse stores, notify their customers with information regarding the source of certain foods. Food products, (covered commodities) contained in the law include muscle cut and ground meats: beef, veal, pork, lamb, goat, and chicken; wild and farm-raised fish and shellfish; fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables; peanuts, pecans, and macadamia nuts; and ginseng. Regulations for fish and shellfish covered commodities (7 CFR Part 60) became effective in 2005. The final rule for all covered commodities (7 CFR Part 60 and Part 65) went into effect on March 16, 2009. AMS-USDA is responsible for administration and enforcement of COOL.

  • Keep up the awesome work!

  • well.... can someone ask her to stop being Cheesy cuz she ain't in the 70's anymore XD

  • @GPBound

I think GM products cover a lot more than those you listed. And we can't forget that corn and soy products make their way into a massive array of different products.

  • Most of the time I see signage in the stores it is actually wrong, more regulation that does nothing

  • Irradiated products must contain a "radura" on the product.

  • I am not sure I get it. If I go to Whole Foods and the bananas that day are from Venezuala, what actions should I take? Wait until next year when I can get some American bananas? Come back when the Costan Ricans are available? Am I supposed to boycott a country? Do certain countries have healthier bananas?

What is my Venezuelan banana trying to tell me?

To me, this is simply data, not information.

  • Just remember - USDA - COOL PROHIBITS NAIS.

Another thing. While I applaud COOL, and think its long overdue that we should know where our food comes from, it does NOTHING to promote US Grown.

We should NOT be exporting more than we import when our own people are starving.

We should NOT be playing with the kids over at WTO in violation of our Constitution.

And - we should NOT be treating you administrators as if you had any legal authority whatsoever.

  • Definitely a good way to help engage consumers into figuring out more about their food.

MadSmokerBBQ - Really the only things that have been GM that reach us on a consumer level are Corn,Soy, Cotton - MCDonalds fries and Potatoes used to be but they yanked that once consumers freaked.

  • If you cut the fruit you don't have to label it. If you cook the meat you don't have to label it. If I tied a peanut to a pineapple would I have to label it?
