Mustafa was born as the son of Mr and Mrs Ali Rıza Efendi Turkish and Zübeyde Hanım in Salonika, which was then a part of the Ottoman Empire. Mustafa's paternal grandfather, Kızıl Hafız Ahmed was one of the Yörük Türkmen.
