It began as a peaceful demonstration.

It ended in violence, with at least 156 people dead and 800 injured, in what is being described as the worst ethnic violence in Xinjiang in more than two decades.

The photos you see here show a city in chaos. On Sunday, July 5th, hundreds of minority Uygers gathered in the streets of Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, to protest what they say has been decades of discrimination.

The more troubling of images recall the deadly ethnic violence that that flared up in Tibet just a year ago.

It's a stark reminder of the short comings of the central government's Go West development policy, which critics say haven't evenly benefited all ethnic groups in the autonomous region.

The apparent source of the Uygers' anger lay close to Hong Kong. In June, a deadly brawl between Uygur and Han Chinese workers at a Guangdong toy factory left at least two Uygurs dead.

Protestors on Sunday had reportedly demanded an investigation into those killings.

No one is sure why, but the street demonstration turned violent.

Reports indicate violence erupted after police moved into to break up the protests.

Violence begat violence and the protest turned into a riot. Among the dead and injured are both Uygurs and Han Chinese, but hospitals claim the majority of casualties were Han Chinese.

The central government has been quick to condemn the riots, calling the uprising a plot against Communist rule.

The government blames Xinjiang independence groups and in particular the World Uyger Congress, led by businesswoman Rebiya Kadeer.

As of Tuesday, police and soldiers were attempting to restore some semblance of calm to the streets of Urumqi.

But tempers remain high and not even tear gas could deter this group of armed men, bent on revenge.

In Xinjiang, there is little talk of racial reconciliation between Uyger and Han Chinese. Instead they talk of the recriminations and reprisals yet to come.
