This is a haphazard tour of the engine room of the containership I was working on, the Hatsu Shine. It was a 7024 TEU containership. Ever wonder what the engine room of a modern commercial freighter looks like? Well, you're about to find out.

  • I used to be a engineering mechanic on grey ships,I can't get over how much room there is on merchant vessels.

  • Bear in mind everything is scaled down to the size of Japanese people! There was about half a foot of clearance for my head on the bridge, and I'm six foot tall.

  • Well, I must admit I thought 80% was a bit optimistic. However, it's the most efficient way of transporting cargo. About 90% of world trade operates across the sea.

  • At navigational full the engine burns something like 200 gallons of fuel oil an hour. It's about 80% efficient.

  • Tell me about it. I have no idea what most of that shit actually does. In my photos of the engine room, I have named photos as 'The Scary Machine' and 'Everyone loves arcane tangles of pipes'.

I had little interest in ships before I became a cadet, but they are pretty cool. The world economy is completely dependent on shipping.

  • Sweet

  • Interesting. I would LOVE to stand on the third deck of one of these Wärtsilä-Sulzer RT flex 96-Cs in full operation! Unfortunately, I had met only one person who works on a ship like this, but lost contact with him!

Unlike cruise ships where the engine room is generally off limits, to my knowledge signing up to travel in a container ship is less restrictive. That was some time ago, I do hope that access is still allowed these days!

(Would love to work on a ship like that) myself!

  • what class of ship is that??? and what engine

  • Actualy, diesels are really only 40% efficient. Steam turbines are approximately 33% efficient. But, give me a steam engine room, anyday!! I'll make that turbine sing!!=Stefan=

  • Just took a cruise on Norwegian Pearl. 100,000 horse power, 5 diesel engines, each is a 12 cylinder and each cylinder displaces 6 liters! Thgey don't allow tours of the engine room anymore.

  • I don't know if it's better to built or to drive these kind of engines ;)

Well done, dude. I think I'll apply for a job to a shipping company.

  • How does one go about securing a job on a container ship?

  • Good vid! I work as an engineer for P&O Nedlloyd sailing with the new sulzer rt-flex engines, All electronic injection no traditional camshaft for contolling injection just a magical black box, break down all the time but hey its character building... or at least thats what the chief tells us lol
