Patty Martin of Emigrant, Mont., takes hard-to-adopt dogs from the local animal shelter and puts ads in the paper to find them homes. If the family accepts the adoption, Martin pays the fees and sometimes chips in for veterinary care and training.
Ema and her daughter, Sage, a pair of blue heelers, are Martin's current project. Ema is blind, and Sage acts as her guide, making the two dogs inseparable.
