An E36 BMW's dual-mass flywheel making a grinding noise. Normal?

  • I just assumed it was normal, since it seemed logical the springs on the inside of the flywheel would naturally touch the sides. Anyway, put on the new clutch and left the flywheel alone. Drives and sounds great...

  • Thats how a 15 year old double mass flywheel sounds like!

  • this is broken flywheel...You should to change it on new :/ or You can put in Your BMW the single flywheel...it'll be cheaper and stronger

  • i goty a lightweight flywheel is that normal 4 it 2 knock but it aonly does it when the car warms up

  • Changed mine on my E36 for a single mass when the clutch wore out.

Anyone who has an E36 with an M42 engine send a message if you want any info on how to do it, and what parts you can use, etc.

  • Typical of a junky dmf

  • Shouldn't sound like that. Common problem on E36s. Can be replaced with E30 parts to do away with the DMF.

  • I have the same noise. It sound rough on start up. Some mechanic told me it is "normal". It is ugly though
