More on the big induction heater.
I made a larger coil today (7" i.d., 3/8" copper tubing, 6 turns), so I can fit larger workpieces. Notice the #4 clay-graphite crucible nearby...hopefully I'll get to use it soon!
The coil should be around 6.6uH, so it will resonate at 13.8kHz. I measured 15.6kHz on the oscilloscope (still above resonance), which is within my audible range. It sounds like a very loud TV flyback. Wear ear plugs!

nice work, it's starting to look like one of those multithousand dollar bastards, but lots cheaper. you mention high pitched whining. the guy who lives at the top of my road is seriously into HAM radio. in fact, he runs an emergency service radio network. he also has some form of high power switch mode supply I'm guessing, because I can hear the whistle from quite far away from his place. i doubt he can anymore. :P
