... but I don't think the moral outrage is completely justified against steroids. Steroids, to be honest, have worked. People like athletes on steroids, because they love to go out and see people hit home runs, and baseball games that end 1-0 just cant compete with one where each team hits 5 hrs. Call it a lust for entertainment. As for why Bonds and Rodriguez used, its obvious: they were at their peak, and steroids could take them higher. Some people jsut peak higher, some peak at a .250 BA

...out to be. There are some side effects of steroids, namely atrophy in places dear to most men (which should scare most people away!), acne, and a few others. There's 0 evidence for "roid rage", heart damage, or suicidal tendencies. Pop culture medicine has gotten it very wrong. Thousands and thousands of athletes have used steroids for decades, to no severe consequences. As an amateur strength I don't do steroids, and won't (I don't like the stigma, the side effects, and the cost), ...cont

Fr. Barron,
As someone who follows your blog, and finds your vlogs very insightful, I have to disagree with a lot of this video. I think a lot of our perceptions on steroids are simply wrong. There may be something subjectively wrong with steroids (if they are banned in a competition it would be wrong to use them), but arguing that they are objectively immoral is a tough sell. It's a tough sell because steroids aren't very dangerous for you, and certainly not as dangerous as they are made..cont

that was a great explanation of addiction and as a recovering addict myself, it is the most uplifting and freeing solution, i have ever heard.
i wish i had heard that before i started using, but am glad to hear it now.
when i get a job im definitly going to donate to wordonfire cause its so full of truth and one is always more dignified after listening to it.

David Foster Wallace, the great authour, actually touched on this very topic during a commencement speech in 2005. He noted that belief in God could be the place of ultimate attachment like you talked about in this video, but if that were the only place of fulfillment, all those who question or disbelieve the existence of God would be like those players, which of course is absurd. Wallace included "a set of uncompromising principles" as another such attachment which could fulfill that. Thoughts?

Rather than having something "godlike" missing in their lives, could it not be that these players, engaging in an essentially unimportant and superfluous activity anyway, simply failed to exercise reason? Reason definitely argues counter to anabolic steroid or growth hormone use except for specifically therapeutic indications, primarily because of their long-term side effects. I would argue that the application of reason automatically leads to better decisions for ourselves. No need for god.

You don't have to know a thing about either theology or baseball to know that Father Robert Barron is right about this.
