Shot of a eastbound mostly forest product train approaching the west end of Cliff. Answers the question of why the Tehachapi helper power was so dirty. First unit in the helper set is one of the daylight units.

  • You know guys, This is a time when railroading was AT ITS BEST!!!! ROAR POWER! Nothing beat SP and SF 2nd gneration diesels roaring over tehachapi pass! i gotta tell ya, railroading there today sis so boring compared to when it was SP/SF.. This same train we saw here, today, would have only 3 wide cabs on it and practically no sound! the new engines are too quiet and they don't SHOW BALLS like SD40T's did!!!! Case closed!

  • Gosh friggin dangit i miss that diesel cloud out of tunnel 5 so much! I miss even more the shell oil cans comming outa that tunnel with 5 on the front 5 in the middle. Looked like the tunnel was in flames. Only train worth seeing now on tehachapi is the loaded BNSF grain train. 4 locos in the front, 4 in the middle and 2 at the end.

  • Nice diesel-power video. Thumbs up! :)

  • noticing the BN cars in this consist, this train might be SECIY or SELAY, 1980s train symbols that consist of traffic from Seattle via the BN, then the BN gives it to the SP in Portland and then the SP takes over on it's way to points in Southern California. SECIY is the Seattle to City of Industry and the SELAY is the Seattle to L.A. I love lumber trains from the Pacific Northwest.

  • @UH1DHuey DPU's also suck. seeing a stack train with one unit on the head end and one on the rear looks ridiculous. Also you never see 4-axle power on trains anymore. I like the SD70M's but i'd still take SD40 and 45's anyday.

  • For a second there I thought there was a steam engine coming out of the tunnel :-). Nice catch and video.

  • 1980's railroading, SP style, the good ol' Southern Pacific in it's best years, things were better back then, music, tv, movies, wrestling, cartoons, etc. Today's railroading will NEVER compare. RIP SP.

  • WOW

  • The other daylight unit you were referring to was sp7342 not 7432 which would make it a Sac rebuild sd45.....

  • Is there anything better than that!!!, just pure EMD power!!!, great footage cz17west, well done. Cheers, EMDC501.

  • actually the lead unit in the helper is SD45 7399 if you look closely you can see the flare in the radiator making it an SD45.
