Maxine's Dash for Freedom

On the night of Tuesday, September 18, 2007 a cow was spotted on the streets of Queens. She was tagged for slaughter, but escaped that fate and literally ran for her life. Police and firefighters captured her and brought her to Animal Care & Control in Manhattan. From there, Farm Sanctuary's rescue team stepped in to bring the Fugitive cow, now named Maxine, to safety at our 175-acre sanctuary for farm animals where she will live out her life in peace and comfort.

Thanks to the people who responded to help this cow in need, Maxine will have a life full of green pastures, a warm cozy barn, nourishing food and fresh water, veterinary care, a herd of cattle friends, and the love of shelter caregivers at Farm Sanctuary.

Don't compare your life to that of a slave or a factory farm animal, it is an insult to those individuals. You are sitting around justifying the indefensible because you like the taste. Just admit it, because you will not win this argument.

Raising animals for food is cruel, it's the single largest cause of greenhouse gas emissions, and it's not even necessary for most of us to survive. These are facts.

A life spent in confinement, being torn from your mother, tortured, and ultimately slaughtered and eaten is not much of a life.

Well no, if I cut up a cow I would not say "Yummy steak", as most of what I would be seeing wouldn't be steak. There's chuck, round, sirloin, flank, brisket, rib, and a few others that aren't coming to my mind right now. And the offal, which is delicious in a stew or even a pâté if you're feeling fancy.

I've slaughtered and butchered more than a few animals, from chickens to pigs to a calf for veal. They're all delicious. And they all have only one purpose: being FOOD.
