Take a ride on 4522 on the Transitway with it's retarder off. In my opinion, I think the buses sound a lot better and unique with the retarders off. Though I do not encourage this for drivers driving the articulated buses (D60LF).

  • Cool! I always take the bus from St. Laurent.

  • I would have to disagree. Here in Pgh, none of our artics have retarders and are used on high speed busways and we have a lot of steep hills because of the mountains. BTW, we've been ordering artics since 79' without them and haven't had any problems.

  • Ordering Artics without retarders would be a suicide move, especially on a busy route that is also high speed. Like route 95 in Ottawa here. In fact a bus caught fire just three days ago for a non-functioning retarder. It was a D60LF and it was on route 95.

  • BTW Nice vid!!

  • I understand that. especially due to the climate in Canada. I was just stating that all artics made don't have retarders.

  • All of OC Transpo's artics do have retarders.

  • All artics do not come with retarders. It's only specific to what the TA wants in their equipment. Most artics will not catch fire due to high brake heat either due to even brake power distribution. The third axel on these buses pick up the slack. The driver who did a code 3 was either scared, or has never driven a bus that big without a retarder.

  • Just as an FYI, if drivers turn off the retarder on a D60LF, they are stupid and retarded. Turning off the retarder will cause the brakes to heat up because of the heavy weight of the artic and due to the Transitway being high speeds, it will cause the bus to catch fire.

A driver I know has done a code 3 to an artic for a non-functioning retarder. Control thought he was weird for doing that but he was like "Well unless you want to have a bus fire on your hands today, this bus is Code 3"

  • Hehe, there is this one driver on the 4 who always drives without the retarder.

  • I love the downshifting sound this bus makes. Do you know why the retarders were turned off? And did you notice a difference in handling?
