~ LAURA NYRO ~ written and sung by Laura Nyro. "For the more than three years that impresario Bill Graham`s Filmore East filled the lower Manhatttan night with music from a cavalcade of now legendary acts, it was the epicenter of rock `n` roll in New York City and auguably the known universe. Within its intimate confines, the art of concert performance changed forever; and when Graham decided to shutter the venue in the spring of 1971, a string of historic farewell shows drew the faithful. On May 30, eloquent singer-songwriter Laura Nyro took the stage and, solo on grand piano, serenaded the capacity crowd. A native New Yorker, Nyro`s ardent lyrical poetry and almost impossibly diverse compositions very often sang to the city she loved. On that inspired night, while celebrating and bidding goodbye to one of its most magical spaces, she is spellbinding, and extraordinary artist at her most soulful and passionate best. Less than on month later, the house lights went dark at the Filmore East". Laura Nyro died on April 8, 1997 of ovarian cancer. She was 49.
LITE A FLAME
In the zoo
They gave him a cage
Circus put a sparkle
On his face
Away from life
The elephant walks
Shadow across a dream
Lost for ivory
Oh freedom
Litre a flame
It`s like prejudice
For the color of your skin
Prejudice for a woman
Prejudice for an animal
Like the elephant
Of the plain
Masai moon
In the morningrise
Africa --
The world comes alive
A matriarch
Leads the tribe
To the sweet water
The cool feelin`
Ande the way to survive
Oh freedom
Lite a flame
It`s like prejudice
For the color of your skin
Prejudice for a woman
Prejudice for an animal
Like the elephant
Of the plain
Of the plain
For greed not need
Sociaties sleep
Lead the killing hands on --
Young ones
Full of spark
A wave of birds
Across the park
Kids climbing
Sliding, riding free
Elephant child hiding
Behind a tree
Prejudice
For an animal
Like the elephant
Of the plain
Right, so why the fuck is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame dissing her again this year? Maybe it's because Jan Wenner who heads it up is a douche-bag. I mean Madonna (who has NOTHING do to with R&R and is talentless) is in, but not Laura? WTF? Patti Smith once told me, herself, that she didn't have a lot of female musical influences but Laura was definitely one of them. Great posting and great track. Thanks.
