why don't you destroy the trees?
the tanks can destroy the trees.
Just do like this:
Press Ctrl +click on the tree and it will be destroyed.

It was only a few years after I got the game that I found the engineers on the cliff, but they're really unnecessary in completing the mission so its no big deal.
