  • Thank you very much for your advice. I think you are totally right about speaking slowly helps eliminate accents. But you know, Ann Cook says we shouldn't slow down if we want to acquire an American accent. Is she wrong? Or slowing down is the first step and then we should speed up our speech after a while? I have been wondering about these conflicting ideas for a long time. I'd appreciate your comment. I can tell you care about us who speak English as a second language. Thank you VERY much.

  • If you have an accent when you speak English, then slowing down your rate will give you more time to get your tongue and lips into the correct place to form sounds. When you pronounce sounds correctly, your accent will naturally decrease. This means that speaking more quickly will give you less time to think about how to form sounds and will result in a heavier accent. The goal is not to speak TOO slowly, but to speak slowly enough so that you can speak clearly and be easily understood.

  • I am 14 years old and every body notices my accent i hope i get better :)

  • DAMN! even transcribe audio knows what you are saying

  • @truckerfromreno ,

Most of us learn a language to earn a living....and get information........I have nothing against any accent.... including my own....but the fact is that "English" is a global language today because of US.....had US chosen "German" or "Russian".....or "Spanish"......or a "Native American language " as it national language.....we would be trying to learn that language !......

its a bit harsh...but its the truth.....

  • I really agree with you one hundred percent!

Most of my friends have a very heavy accent beacuse they speak too fast as they are shy or think if they do it fast it makes tehm a great English speaker...WRONG!!

    Thanks ofr the tip.

  • this lady talks sense..

  • @BETO1BETO2 youre not alone =] I have an accent when I speak english and Im trying to get reduce it, and not to stutter as much because its coming back to me :)

  • Absolutely fabulous! From the pacing of the info, the example of good diction, the positive message, the mood of the presenter.....everything was absolutely A1!

And aside from the craftsmanship of the presentation the need for this type of training is HUGE...the self consciousness, reluctance and even embarrassment felt by those who need this training the most is gone with your chosen medium!

(And this is coming from a long time very picky teacher known for frugality when it comes to praise!)

  • If you're going to spend your time learning English then I'd advise you to learn 'real' English and not that spoken anywhere outside England itself.
