This comes from the period of the three-day week and the 10.30 pm TV shutdown.
This was obviously recorded from LWT going by the break bumper, although there are two different announcers heard - maybe the one over the Palladium slide was from ATV (who I think were still producing this revival despite no longer having a London franchise - the 1980s revivals were LWT, though).

No, the show was broadcast live so no problem with the quadruplex tape. thanks for trying. ;)

Most likely at the end of the performance the video master reel which was being played back had a problem, probably badly damaged the reel from the sound of it would be my best guess. It was a common occurence when playing back these broadcast quadraplex reels.
Enjoyed the show, many thanks for posting it, liked the Canada Dry commercial at the end, neat that there was a bit of contunity there as well..
How much of the show was broadcast before it was taken hurriedly off air? Also was this tape made by a private individual on an early domestic video recorder or was it made by LWT? If the latter does it officially exist in their archive?

I think it was after 30 minutes or so. It was recorded on a Sony CV2000B in the dressing room from the London Palladium, receiving the signal live from a "rabbit ear" antenna. This program is not in the ATV archive.

This was shown on 23rd December 1973. There was a bomb scare at the theatre - someone rang the box office at 8.05pm and said a bomb would go off in five minutes. 2000 people were evacuated, and television switched to the Sammy Davis special.

Something like this happened twice on this revived version of the popular 1950s/60s variety show. After the first of the two commercial breaks that the programme featured, had it gone out properly, the picture went all weird - the programme was taken off and, on this clip, replaced with a programme with Sammy Davis, Jr. On a later edition of this show, at almost exactly the same point, the same bit of weirdness occurred again - and we found ourselves watching a programme with Rolf Harris in it!

Sorry,
The problem was nothing technical. Thanks.
