This is a world renown Indonesian folk song. Have been sung in many languages and singers, including Teresa Teng.

It is the lament of a Mother, because her husband, the father of her daughter, was away fighting as a guerrilla fighter, for the Independence of Indonesia against the Dutch between 1945-1948. The song came from Tapanuli, North Sumatra near Lake Toba.

  • I heard this song when I was a little kid, like 7 or 8 years old. It was translated into Chinese and sung by a Chinese female singer. My mom also used to sing this song. This song has left a very deep impression on me. Thanks for sharing.

  • @Baohuluxiake TQ for your note. yes, this song was and is very popular, especially on the Mainland because it is about revolutionary struggle for independence. The Chinese title is called: Bao Beo 宝贝. - Stanley
