This is a little wireframe rendering of the Stanford Bunny on a chinese MP4 player based on the SPMP3052 chip. The hardware performs 2D line rendering, and the 3D vertex transform is done in software. Multiple stipple settings are used for the lines in sequence - as the stipple becomes sparser, it becomes a nice dot-cloud effect that makes it look like the model has many more points than it really does. The model has 448 vertices and 1416 lines. Currently a PC triggers each frame via the serial port (even though all the processing happens on the SPMP3052), so it's slower than it would be otherwise.

Fun fact: the rendering is orthographic, which means depth information isn't present. This makes it a bit of an optical illusion: do you see the rabbit turning clockwise or anticlockwise (looking from above)? Both are valid!

  • sku.21968

  • so you meen it's like a 3-d engine?

  • it's a hardware 2D engine that can draw lines, but you use software to calculate where the lines should be to draw a 3D wireframe, which is what I'm doing here.
