Wonderful performance by the great Leyla Gencer. The cavatina is a quite rushed and no trills, as if she was like " OMG, hurry up, I gotta go pee", but it's a beautiful sound. The cabaletta is also included.

  • @robertdonkers

Im referring to Joan Sutherland :/ Sorry I'm not a Gencer expert

  • @LohengrinT What studio performance? Surely she never recorded in studio, if so, please more info!

  • A DUE PERSONE NON PIACE QUESTO ?? AHAHAHAHAH E CHI ANDATE AD APPLAUDIRE ADESSO ??? AHAHAHAHHAAH

  • Well I just downloaded the Naples Beatrice (the one I was missing) and this is the only time she actually attempts the 3rd part of the phrase along with the 3rd trill, not with the quality she gave in her studio version but definitely without the omitted part of the Milan Beatrice or the muffled part New York Beatrice

  • Off the top of my head, there's New York, La Scala, and a third recording from Napoli.

  • I agree this is one of the most difficult arias and if I had not heard the perfection with which Sutherland sings the second line with the trills in her studio version, I wouldnt be so rough either with the live Sutherland or with poor Gencer. I have two live Beatrices (I ll look up the details) and in both of them Sutherland runs out of breath, losses tonality accuracy and even skips the 3rd trill in one. Is there a 3rd live beatrice? I want iiiiiiiiiiiiiiit :p

  • This is a difficult aria. There are 3 live recordings of Beatrice with Sutherland. Which one did she mess up (or was it all of them)? I want to listen to it again and compare it to her studio.

Gencer doesn't sing any of the trills, but honestly most singers can't do them properly anyway. Sutherland always made them sound easy, even on bad nights.

  • omg terrible... this aria contains one of the most difficult vocal lines ever written for a human voice A line which Sutherland sings to Perfection in her studio Beatrice (and fucks up totally in her live Beatrices where she runs out of breath trying to sing it).

Gencer simply cannot sing this line which Bellini thought to actually use twice the second time adding 3 killing trills :)
