The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) rescued a maid trapped in unit that was entirely engulfed by fire at Jalan Rajah.

The SCDF crew used cutting and braking tools to cut open the iron gate and rescue the maid.

STOMPer QK sent in this photograph of the fire which he snapped from his home.

The STOMPer recounted:

This was like a midnight fire. I reached home at around one in the morning to the spectacular view of a column of black smoke rising into the city landscape.

Evidently, a sizeable fire had broken out shortly before at the Balestier area.

The fire brigade presumably got the fire under control at around 1:45 as the smoke turned grey and diminished in intensity, soon leaving just a patch of black clouds in the city skyline.

A spokesman from SCDF said:


The unit fire occurred at 1:09am today (Nov 7), at the fourth floor of Block 108 Jalan Rajah.

At 1:09am, SCDF received a call informing that a unit is on fire at the above-mentioned location. SCDF responded within 6 minutes to the location.

A fire engine, two red rhinos, a support appliance and two ambulances were deployed.


On arrival, the crew found the unit fully engulfed with fire and the maid was trapped in the unit.

SCDF crew used cutting and braking tools to cut open the iron gate and subsequently rescued the maid to safety. She was conveyed to Singapore General Hospital for observation.


The fire was brought under control in 10 minutes. The unit suffered extensive fire damage.


Another female Chinese, who was from the unit directly above the fire, was also conveyed to Singapore General Hospital for observation.

Omg~ I teared when I saw the operation take place. Especially at 8:21 when the maid was carried to the ambulance. SCDF, thank you for risking everything for us.

For those of you who want to make unkind remarks, please, these guys can just stay at home and sleep, instead of risking their lives and making their loved ones worry every time they go on an operation. They've chosen to help strangers fight for theirs and their loved ones' lives. Salute them. They deserve every bit of our respect. =D

Im a NSF SCDF in one of the stations . Utmost, I respect all the firefighters and the Paramedics for saving lives and property in Singapore. You guys deserved a standing ovation. There's nothing to be argue about. Home Team is still the best! And same goes to SAF. ;)

And i have to agree with angzihui ... That firefighter ran all the way down using STAIRS and not the LIFT then RAN ALL THE WAY TO THE AMBULANCE to make sure the maid get immediate treatment .. Doesnt it tells sumthing ??? and to the one that uploads this vidz , BIG THANKS TO U ! Indeed , its people like you that makes a difference ...

Im proud to the dedications tat these fire fighters give towards all these .. Despite the negativity tat people have bout them , still when it comes to saving lives , these fire fighters do their best to just give it their all .. I proud to be in love and married to one =)

Why do people feel so proud to be in the scdf or even scdcc that they had to state that they are from blah blah blah when lots of them complain here and there.. Typical singaporeans.. No offence, i had lots of friends from scdf.. To the firefighters at scene, keep up the good work..

i was from the National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC), one of the uniform groups in secondary schools which was established in 2005-2006, and is still one of the chosen CCA in schools up till today.

as a female cadet officer with the last held rank of senior cadet lieutenant, i was given the opportunity to attend a 4-days firefighting course specially held for officers in NCDCC. it was really an eye-opener undergoing such courses. we were taught on how the SCDF personnels have to plan and
