Hansel and Gretel, An Appalachian Version was the first film Tom and Mimi Davenport made in their FROM THE BROTHERS GRIMM series. Made in the late 1970s on 16mm film, the story is set in the Great Depression in America. Also on youtube are Bearskin, Ashpet, and Soldier Jack.
These American adaptations of folk/fairytales "From the Brothers Grimm" were broadcast to schools on public television stations during the 1980s and 1990s. They are available on dvd from www.davenportfilms.com.

  • I could never understand why the husband didn't say, 'Git wumman, I ain't abandoning my kids for nuttin. If there's not enough food, YOU leave.' Weakling

  • @Waitakeredame From a child's standpoint, it is reasonable for the husband to agree. In most marriages husbands and wives present a united front to a child even when one parent might not be totally in agreement with the other. What if a father said to a kid, your mother is totally unreasonable and I don't agree? Of course this issue is a life and death one, but to a child little things like staying up an extra hour or not eating greens, can seem like life and death.

  • @Waitakeredame You have to think of it after the time period the story was written in. Back then your children were your retirement plan, so to speak. They were the ones that took care of you when you got old.
